Assetto Corsa Competizione tires (ACC)

The only connection between the car and the track are the tires. Assetto Corsa Competizione tires are very sensitive. Our goal is to keep that connection on the race track at all times to get the most out of the car.

While the tires are one of the most important parts of the car, sometimes we don’t pay attention to them. To be able to push the car to its limits, it is important that the tires are in optimum condition to do so. There are other things to take into consideration Before you Start Racing but for now we are going to talk about tires.

Tire temperatures

To get the most grip from the tires, they must be within their operating temperature range, it varies from sim to sim and depends on the tire model. Tires in Assetto Corsa Competizione for instance, GT3´s and GT4´s operating temperature is between 40 – 130 degrees Celsius in dry conditions, and for wet conditions is between 20 – 80 degrees Celsius. Although, the optimum temperature ranges are narrower and they are the following:

Dry

  • 70 – 90 °C

Wet

  • 30 – 70 °C

Tire pressure

Tire pressures play a huge role in how the car handles, even how much fuel you will use in a race. An optimal inflated tire will help your whole setup to get the maximum grip the tire can provide and the best fuel consumption among other variables.

Tire pressures are affected by ambient temperature, tire temperature, driving style, suspension setup, etc.

Getting the correct or optimum tire pressures sometimes becomes a challenge. It is recommended to adjust the tire pressures after completing 5 laps, this is because, after 5 laps your tires will be up to temp and the tire pressure will be more accurate this way. Keep in mind that tire temperature will change your tire pressures, and tire temps change with ambient temperature as mentioned before.

Optimum tire pressures (slicks)

GT3

  • DHE (2020)                         27.3 to 27.9
  • DHD2 (2019)                       27.5 to 28.0

GT4

  • DHE                                       26.8 to 27.4

Optimum tire pressures (Wet)

  • Wet compound GT3 and GT4      29.5 to 31

Tire grip

Tires are capable to take 1 complete force at a time, it can be turning, braking, or accelerating. The good thing is, we can fractionate that force into different portions of forces.

This means we can apply the brake and turn at the same time, by keeping the grip in proportion to the forces applied. For example, we can apply a 70% braking force and a 30% turning force to the tires without exceeding the limits of the tires. Going over that 100% force will result in loose of grip, greater tire wear, and slower lap times.

We can combine braking, turning, and accelerating forces with our inputs. As a rule, never go over the actual force a tire can take.

Tires play a huge role in ACC setups and car handling. As a “rule”, always check tire pressures before doing any setup adjustments. Also, overdriving can give you a false overview of how the tires are behaving, and if a setup adjustment is needed.
